As part of the widespread call that governments should be seeking to ‘build back better’, many people have been arguing for a ‘green recovery’. This would see government and private sector spending directed at low-carbon and other environmental sectors, such as home insulation, renewable energy and nature conservation. Such spending would create jobs while also contributing to the goals of achieving ‘net zero’ greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century, reducing pollution and conserving biodiversity. Spending in these sectors can often create relatively high numbers of jobs per pound spent, and are well distributed across the country.
