How can economies prioritise our wellbeing?

The limitations of using Gross Domestic Product to measure economic success are well known. Even before the pandemic, interest in broader-based conceptions of progress led some governments – those of Iceland and New Zealand, for instance - to trial using wellbeing metrics to guide public spending. Now, in highlighting the fragility of our economies, the Covid-19 outbreak has opened up further space for reassessing the goals of economic policy. This session will explore how an approach to policy that prioritises wellbeing could sit at the heart of efforts to recover from the pandemic.
